To start working as a designer in the field of sports is the same as any other field. You don’t need a lot of experience in design, you just need to love sport and keep up with all the events and games.
There are plenty of experienced designers with many years of practice in different fields which probably wouldn’t be the best choice for sport design. As I said before, and ill say it again you need to love your job. The question is how will the client choose you among all the others?

You never had clients, or work related to design?
That shouldn’t stop you from making a portfolio. Recommendations are always good, but everyone had their first job once, so don’t let the lack of experience stop you.
To gain more experience is just practice. You know someone once said, practice makes it perfect.
Since you chose something you love this shouldn’t be hard. There is no instant money and success. The more you invest in yourself the more will come back to you in time. The beginning should be about you, and your patience. Do your research, use Pinterest, Instagram, go back to childhood, and find your creative side. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to learn something. Knowledge is free today, the thing that will cost you the most is your time. Google can answer most of your questions, and for the rest there is Youtube.
I have read that the clients besides looking at your portfolio, they are following what you saved, and liked. Even if your work isn’t great, the client might see the way you think, like and what you think is good quality design. Besides patience you need the ambition to become the best version of yourself.
These things will make your portfolio look professional in no time.

If you like something, leave a comment, someone might notice you and go to your profile to check you out. On the other side of the world, some good people who might like the same things as you do, so even if work doesn’t come up, some great friendships might. People that helped me in this job, are the people I knew for the shortest period of my life.
